Journalism Ethics Committee

I became one of the founding members of the Carlmont Journalism Ethics Committee at the start of the 2022-2023 school year. I decided to get involved with the group because ethics are the foundation of my reporting, and with a staff of about 120, Scot Scoop could benefit from a team ensuring that all reporters adhere to a just ethical code.

Below are two of our presentations from the 2022-2023 school year.

Commitment to Diversity

One of my responsibilities as an ethical journalist is to ensure my coverage aligns with the diverse population I'm reporting on. In my own writing, I strive for gender equity in sources and frequently address topics relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This feature article, "Juvenile (in)justice: girls in the system," discussed the experiences and challenges that come with being a girl in a justice system designed for boys.

My commitment to diversity extends to my interactions with other student journalists. As an editor, I emphasize diversity in sources and take points off of the beat rubric if a writer is lacking in this area. As a leader, I bring forward issues of inequity to the editorial board and entire staff as soon I recognize them.

For example, in the first semester of the 2021-2022 school year, I noticed that our sports coverage was enormously imbalanced, with three-quarters of the articles discussing boys teams. Upon further evaluation, I realized that much of our coverage reflected the same gender inequity. I promptly made a presentation on the issue and presented in early December 2022. While there is still room for improvement, our coverage is largely balanced now.
